The Palo Alto field hockey team opened its second season of existence with a solid effort in its first contest, a home scrimmage Tuesday.
The Vikings scored six goals and hope to carry that over to Thursday’s 4 p.m. home game against Westmont. With a majority of the team returning with a year of experience, coach Jenny Crane has to believe Paly will improve on its 2-15 record.
Several other local teams competed in “Sportsmanship” games, exhibitions and scrimmages as the high school fall sports season officially opens.
The Paly boys water polo team competed against Carlmont on Tuesday. The Vikings are looking to repeat as Central Coast Section Division I champions. Menlo School hosts Santa Cruz in a boys water polo game at 5:30 p.m.
There’s a full slate of games scheduled Thursday. In addition to field hockey and boys water polo, the Palo Alto girls’ tennis team travels to play Sacred Heart Prep at 3:45 p.m. and Castilleja tennis goes to Lynbrook for a 4 p.m. start.
